Frequently Asked Questions

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works with the body’s bioelectric energy, “qi” (chee). Qi flows in well-defined pathways throughout the body. Acupuncture points are places where this energy flow is easily accessible. When the flow of energy is blocked or disrupted, pain, discomfort and illness can appear. Your acupuncturist identifies where the energy flow is disrupted and through the use of specifically chosen acupuncture points encourages the body towards smooth and balanced energy flow. As a healthy flow is restored, the entire body benefits, and symptoms tend to disappear. Research into how acupuncture works on a biological level is still ongoing, but it has been found that acupuncture can cause the release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers), stimulate the immune system and influence the nervous system.

Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a licensed and well-trained practitioner, acupuncture is one of the safest treatment options available today. By activating the body’s ability to heal itself, acupuncture is a very natural therapy and can safely be used alongside many western and complementary treatments.

How many sessions will it take until I am feeling better?

The number of treatments depends on the condition and the constitution of the individual patient. Some acute cases can be resolved in one or two treatments. More chronic problems can require weekly visits and longer term treatment. Each person responds to treatment in a unique way and your acupuncturist will work with you to find the best path to health for you. A patient’s road to health is vastly shortened through each patient’s active participation in his or her own recovery. Once patients have reached their initial health goals, many return to acupuncture for “tune-ups”, maintenance, and preventative care.

What is the difference between Japanese & Chinese acupuncture?

As Traditional Chinese Medicine has spread across the globe, it has also evolved. Each culture put their own flavor on the style of acupuncture which developed there. At Synergy we practice both Chinese and Japanese styles of acupuncture. So what’s the difference? In Japanese acupuncture, the needles tend to be even finer than those used in Chinese style. Treatments often use fewer needles, with shallower insertion and gentler stimulation of those needles. Japanese style focuses more strongly on treating the underlying imbalances which are the cause of symptoms while still addressing the symptoms themselves. There are also many tools which Japanese style employs which are completely non-insertive, making it ideal for needle sensitive or fragile patients and children.

What is Shakuju?

Shakuju Therapy is a Japanese style of acupuncture developed by Master Kobayashi of Toyko. It is a completely non-insertive style of acupuncture which utilizes a specialized needle called a teishin to effect treatment by touching it to specific points on the body. It is effective for many patients but is especially ideal for children and sensitive patients.
